I live in Los Angeles, and one of the many reasons I consider this to be a great thing is my proximity to really great live music all the time. I now can’t remember how one even procured tickets to such events pre-internet, but in my past 5-or-so attempts to buy them I have failed. Was I too slow? No. I’m on the right mailing lists and have pre-purchase codes whenever they’re actually a thing. I know the exact minute the tickets go on sale, I pay extra each month for the highest-speed internet connection offered residentially and I’m not only quick with a mouse but also fluent in captcha. I also never ask for more than 2 tickets in Best Available when purchasing.

So why then have I not been able to buy tickets to any shows in LA lately? Because StubHub buys up easily half of what’s available and then charges up to twice the face value for them. This isn’t so bad if it’s a $25/ticket show that gets sold at $38 instead (Roxy), but I just failed to purchase tickets to see Mika at the El Rey the exact second they went on sale, failed after 15 minutes of refreshing/trying and there are already 128 tickets for sale on StubHub from $74 - $90 each. For general admission. I don’t understand how this is isn’t scalping. I also don’t understand how they can sleep at night with their mission statement of “….provide fans a safe, convenient place to get tickets to the games, concerts, and theater shows they want to see, and an easy way to sell their tickets when they can’t go.” You know what used to be the easiest? Clicking a Ticketmaster link to buy tickets and being able to immediately do that. Or even do that an hour or so after the event went up in a decent-sized venue.

Ticketmaster’s ethics are already a bit much to stomach. Assuming one is lucky enough to actually buy the tickets that were advertised, there is all manner of financial lameness slathered onto the sale. I get it that album sales don’t drive the industry anymore; it’s all ticket and merch sales that keep the wheels greased and mouths fed. Why then, when it’s already so hard for actual artists and those that support them to make money are third parties jumping in the way and keeping me from seeing artists whose albums I’ve actually purchased, not given away on the internet and worn the fuck out in hopes of seeing them do it in my presence some lovely evening?

UPDATE: I actually hadn’t seen all the tickets available on StubHub. They go as high as $350. For a general admission show that just went on sale 40 minutes ago.

I bought myself a ‘65 acoustic guitar for Christmas intending to ship it to myself at my parents’ house in North Carolina and be all “Yay! (*strum strum*)” but the seller could only ship to my PayPal verified shipping address - which I totally understand because it’s standard procedure - so I won’t get it until I get back to California and also the love of my life is visiting his own family and I miss him so for Christmas I’m giving myself the best pictures Sean Astin has ever taken. the day the Facebook/Instagram world was ending and not the real physical world we used to be content with. It’s gotten to the point where every day I ponder deleting my account, but then feel like that represents some sort of social withdrawal or hermitage. Or that it will affect my ability to obtain work as a freelancer. And being self-employed working from a home studio, social media is often a godsend with regard to feeling tied to the world outside. Now to morph that into a ‘I’m an artist that also makes a career from (some of) what I create in a world where that’s becoming increasingly hard to do’ conversation, my keen awareness of how it feels to have someone highjack and profit from my art makes it hard for me to be okay with the trend of Facebook - and now even more blatantly Instagram - to assume perpetual ownership of the information we share on it. I can and certainly will choose to offer some of my music for free download on sites, and there’s nothing I can do to stop people from obtaining it for free throughout the universe anyway once I’ve fully released it. But (a) that’s the art I create more for art’s sake and (b) that’s the way the world works now, and a far cry from a website that’s essentially a high school reunion saying “Hey, we own all your precious moments and memories you shared with people we don’t even want to know - but also own - and we may as well see if we can’t make some money because God knows the gazillion dollars we’ve made so far will run out before the Mayan calendar fully repeats itself. Also, we too must eat!….gold-plated, caviar-topped everything!”

Twitter and tumblr have done a quite seamless and tasteful job monetizing what they do in a way that doesn’t highjack our souls beyond the ‘public diary’ that we all signed up for them being in the first place. Pinterest…is also a thing. Craigslist is still its awesome, democratic, ‘lost cat flyer on a telephone pole’ self and shows every sign of staying that way. In light of what social media has proven itself capable of in terms of helping causes, reuniting people and keeping humanity and compassion alive in wondrous ways, it’s doubly gross to watch one behemoth grab ever more. Far grosser than the grossest negatives that also come with the above-mentioned connecting and interacting (aka Comments sections and political arguments that never end because no one changes their stance or shows so much as compassion when it’s the only one in the physical space they’re feverishly typing/misspelling from).

We have until January 16th to delete our Instagram accounts and avoid their legal ownership of our memories thus far, so I’ll be doing that. Perhaps I’ll then recreate it and proceed differently so my loved ones don’t end up in a sofa, dog food or [insert one of 10,000 pharmaceuticals] ad. I create music for ads which is gloriously anonymous, but our physical selves are far from that. But also, perhaps on Dec 21st I’ll click Delete Account and end the Facebook world completely. It’s not like I can’t be found myriad other ways by the people I actually want to find me.

Sharing this on Facebook and biting the hand that feeds seems 1000% appropriate, by the way.
